The + and − signs split an expression into terms. Each term carries the sign in front of it. This is the single most important idea for everything that follows.
One step at a time
Break at every + and −. The sign before a number belongs to it. 7 − 2 + 4 → terms 7, −2, 4. You can add terms in any order as long as each keeps its sign.
Why it works
Money in (+) and money out (−): each amount carries its direction.
