Power of a power.

Raising a power to a power MULTIPLIES the exponents: (xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ. (x³)⁴ = x³ four times = x¹². This is the rule people confuse with the product rule.

Multiply, not add

(x³)⁴ means x³ multiplied 4 times: x³·x³·x³·x³ = x¹². So you multiply the exponents.
