Multiply decimals.

To multiply decimals, forget the points and multiply the digits as whole numbers. Then count how many decimal places were in the question, and put that many back in the answer.

1.2 × 3: ignore the point → 12 × 3 = 36. The question has one decimal place, so the answer does too: 3.6.

The idea underneath.

Count the places

Each decimal place is a division by ten hidden in the number. Multiply the plain digits, then restore one place for every decimal place in the question. 0.3 × 0.4 has two places: 12 → 0.12.

Why it works

Tenths times tenths makes hundredths — two places.

Lining up the points like in addition.

Fix

For multiplying you don't line up points — you multiply the digits and COUNT places afterward.

Trap

Using too few decimal places.

Fix

0.3 × 0.4 = 0.12 (two places), not 1.2. Count places from BOTH numbers.
