Slope relationships
Same slope → parallel. Slopes multiplying to −1 (flip + negate) → perpendicular.
Why it works
2 and −½ are perpendicular.

Parallel lines have EQUAL slopes. Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals (flip and change the sign): a line with slope 2 is perpendicular to one with slope −½.
Watch the method
Parallel: same slope. Perpendicular: negative reciprocal.
Same slope
Parallel lines have equal slopes.
Same slope → parallel. Slopes multiplying to −1 (flip + negate) → perpendicular.
Why it works
2 and −½ are perpendicular.
A line has slope 3. What is the slope of a line parallel to it?
Answer

A line has slope 3. What is the slope of a line parallel to it?
Answer

Only negating (not flipping).
Perpendicular slope flips AND negates.
Thinking perpendicular slopes are equal.
That’s parallel; perpendicular are negative reciprocals.
