A point is on the line exactly when its coordinates fit the equation; substitute the known coordinate and solve.

x = 4 → y = 7.

Any point on the line satisfies its equation. To find the y for a given x (or vice versa), substitute into y = mx + b and solve. For y = 2x − 1 at x = 4, y = 7 → (4, 7) is on the line.
